Ballroom & Latin

At Dance Workshop we work hard to help you get the best learning experience we can give you. Our classes aren’t too large so you will receive individual attention and guidance as you learn. If you are an absolute beginner with no dance experience at all, watch out for our introductory courses. Coming with a partner is preferred. 

 All classes should be booked in advance. Classes last for one hour.

What to wear?

Wear normal day clothes and a change of shoes or dance shoes. Shoes should have a thin sole and provide easy movement.
No black rubber soles – trainers, boots or flip flops are not suitable.

Classical Ballet

Classical ballet classes IDTA based with an element of free work are available from BEGINNERS to ADVANCED . We encourage adults of all ages either with no experience at all or those who just want to come back to ballet after leaving it off. It is never too late to benefit from the discipline of ballet for those who have always wanted to learn. Ballet encourages strength, suppleness and stamina; in the classes the focus is on correct alignment and strengthening the core central muscles. 

 

Adult ballet classes are on Tuesday evening:

Beginners: 6.30 pm Pay as you come class
Level 2: 6.30 pm
Level 3: 7.30 pm
Level 4: 6.30 pm - Studio 1
Point work: 6.00 pm - 30 minute class

What to wear:

Tights or tight leggings in order for the teacher to see the lines of the body.
Ballet shoes are available to order.

Commercial Dance

Jazz funk classes, with Helen Calcutt, combine hip-hop, street and jazz (Fosse) to create musical, dynamic routines.  Classes focus on musicality and precision in choreography with performance and expression –  a great class for dancers who would like to work within the commercial industry – or those who need a bit of Beyonce-ness in their day!

Intermediate Class: Wednesday, 6.30pm
N.B.Intermediate Commercial class requires up to 2 years experience in jazz /street or modern dance.

NEW beginners class 16+ yrs: Wednesday, 5.30 pm 
All classes are £7.00

contemporary jazz

Contemporary Jazz

Classes, with Helen Calcutt, explore release, flow and emotional drive. Expect fluid, lyrical routines, travelling and jumping sequences, and jazz floor work. Classes also draw on a variation of Lester Horton’s uplifting techniques to maintain stamina, develop core strength, and to align the body – all to a backdrop of world music.

Mixed Levels: Beginners welcome Wednesday evening, 7.30pm - All classes are £7.00

Cuban Salsa

The beauty of learning Salsa in a studio rather than a club is that you get more correction, more tuition in technique, more space (usually) and more chance to go over steps and patterns at your own pace. The classes give every student a chance to develop their technique to a high standard at a pace suitable to them in a fun and easy going environment. 

Absolute Beginners course Thursdays: 6.30 pm

Beginners Course: 7.30 pm (Class FULL)
Level 2 class: 8.45 pm
Combined Inter/advanced Salsa, Son, Rueda and Cha Cha Cha class 7.45pm (Level 3)

Lessons are priced at £7.50 per hour (from September). Courses are £36.00 for six weeks.

What you should wear:
Dance shoes are preferable; soft comfortable shoes are acceptable for initial classes. No boots, black rubber soles, flip-flops or stiletto heels.
Bring a change of shoes as we don’t allow shoes worn straight off the street.

Egyptian Belly Dance

In our Egyptian dance classes at The Dance Workshop, we teach classical, baladi and shaabi styles. In beginners class the focus will be on simple technique of steps and arm movements and  simple dance routines. For ladies only.

What to wear:

Comfortable soft flow skirt or trousers (NO jeans) and top that is easy to move in but is not too baggy, bare feet, band or scarf for the hips.

What should I wear?

Just wear normal comfortable, casual dress that you can move easily in.

Do I need a partner?

No you don’t. Many of our students come on their own and then some come as partners. It’s fine either way.

What should I wear?

Pilates

A reasonable level of fitness is required for general classes. Anyone wishing to attend Pilates at The Dance Workshop should establish their level with the teacher before attending class and go over any health issues beforehand.

Beginners 2 - Monday 7.30 pm (FULL)
New Beginners Course Mondays 8.30 pm 

Improvers Level 2: 6.30 pm - studio 3 
Mixed Levels slow Pilates Tuesday 10.30 am

Intermediate Level 3: 6.30pm - studio 1

Classes are £7.50 (from September)  -Beginners course £39.00 for six weeks

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt or leotard, with a sweatshirt to keep you warm at the beginning of class. A towel is useful to rest your head on and a mat. (If you do not have a suitable mat, they are available to use at The Dance Workshop). Bare feet or socks.

Point Work 16+

This class is open to students qualified at intermediate level with a known examining body or ballet school. The class is mainly barre work with strengthening exercises and build ups for centre work. For new students we would need to see you in a ballet class here at the studios before you take the point work class.

T'ai Chi

Anyone wishing to attend T'ai Chi at The Dance Workshop should establish their level with the teacher before attending class and go over any health issues beforehand.
Cost is determined by the teachers.

Monday: 8.30pm - Open class - Lee style with Gerry Smith
Wednesday: 9.30am - Yang style with Pauline Fletcher

Tap

If you want to get more energy and verve, this class is for you! The classes all focus on good rhythm work, technique and dance routines. Beginner’s class teaches the basic vocabulary of tap with very simple routines; level two begins to develop slightly more demanding technique and routines whereas the intermediate/advanced or level 3 class is for more experienced dancers, who enjoy a fast paced, rhythmical challenge. Tap classes are on Tuesday evening.

What should I wear?

All you need is a pair of tap shoes and a sense of rhythm! If you don’t have tap shoes and want to try it out anyway, we would advise that you wear smooth soled shoes with a small heel. Should you want to buy any tap shoes, we have a good range available at various prices.
